Untrustworthy Trustee

Jericho deserves honest and trustworthy Board of Education trustees. Lying to paint yourself as a victim and further your own cause should be grounds for removal from the board. We need trustees who are honest and have integrity, not liars with a self-serving agenda.

At the April 2024 Board of Education meeting Jericho School Board Trustee, Sam Perlman made a pretty concerning allegation about being surreptitiously recorded by a school district administrator. He was so concerned that he had his public statement submitted and printed in the editorial section of a local newspaper. At the meeting the School Board lawyer said that he would look into the matter and that the allegations needed to be investigated.

The reported incident was cleared up by the superintendent at the April meeting. Mr. Grishman began his remarks by mentioning that this incident should have been brought up and discussed in the executive session since, as Sam indicated, it concerned a district employee. Because Sam’s accusations were made in public, the superintendent felt it needed to be cleared up publicly, as well.

It seems that Sam’s description of what took place is not entirely or even partly accurate.

It was made clear that not only was it not a district administrator, as Mr. Perlman alleged, but that Sam verbally acknowledged, in a video, that he was being recorded. So, he knew he was being recorded and it wasn’t surreptitious, at all. There were no students involved in the conversation he was having while he was being recorded, as he alleged. The conversation was with an adult who was identified as a campaigner for George Santos.

If the facts about the incident are true, it seems like Sam Perlman may have made up this story to make himself out as a victim. How ironic since he seems to care very little about the victims of his abusive behaviors during and outside of Board of Ed meetings. Jericho residents can and should do better when electing trustees for our Board of Education. We need trustworthy board trustees, not dishonest bullies.

Another Misuse of the Board Seat

The March 21 Jericho Board of Education meeting was quite a dramatic event, again. Front and center was the ironic dispatch of board trustee Sam Perlman. He, once again, chose to use his position as a board trustee to bring to light his personal vendettas, this time as a complaint of being recorded by a district employee while he was having a conversation with a student. He presented this accusation publicly and demanded an investigation. No evidence, no facts. You can read what he said (here), since he sent it to a local paper as a letter to the editor. The response from the district’s lawyer was puzzling since it seems this was the first time anyone had heard of this complaint. It should have been, as was mentioned by the lawyer, brought up in executive session and as soon as it occurred, not waiting weeks to make a publicly dramatic display. The efforts this man goes to paint himself as a victim when he behaves, every month, as a clear and obvious bully. His repeated abuse of his position as a trustee to present his warped side of things is something this community should not tolerate. We should wonder where this investigation will lead and how much it will cost the district. Especially since Sam Perlman is so concerned about how much these investigations are costing taxpayers. It’s too bad he doesn’t seem to care about the victims making the complaint or the truth.

Ironically, his statement was later followed by a rebuttal to his previous month’s claim of bias toward the PTA hosting a candidate’s forum for Board of education candidates moderated by the League of Women Voters. The PTA has been hosting the candidates forum event for over 20 years. They don’t select questions or participate in the forum in any way, except to sponsor the activity for building use purposes. At the February Board of Education meeting Sam Perlman accused the PTA of violating National PTA guidelines and creating a biased and unfair event for candidates running for Board of Education positions. Again, abusing his position as a Board of Education trustee to disparage the reputation of a group that has remained impartial and has provided years of leadership and service to the students of this district. The PTA statement made at the March 21 meeting, refuting his February claims, was followed by other supportive statements by community members calling on the Board of Education to behave in a way that our students should see as a positive example, not as an example of poor behavior.

This Board of Education needs to stop this board trustee from abusing his position to promote his own personal attacks. He continually presents misinformation as fact without opportunity for clarification or truth. If the Board cannot get him to behave more honestly, then the voters need to get the job done.

Double Standard

We were again subjected to an extended discussion of Board policy that showed clearly how a member of the board of education wants one standard for himself and another for anyone who disagrees with him.

The Board was presenting several policies which would establish a code of ethics and behaviors for board members. These policies were prompted by a recent investigation in the behaviors of a certain board member towards staff members and other board members.

The first policy up for discussion was met with a snag when a point was introduced that any board member who accepted a campaign contribution would be forced to recuse themselves on any vote related to the donor. The point of contention was clearly made by two board members who have been very critical about the support current school board members received from the community and unions in the recent school board elections. Perhaps these board members were upset because their supported candidate(s) lost in both elections.

The board then discussed a policy specifically about how board members should speak to one another and refrain from vitriolic speech toward one another during board meetings. The sticking point was that there should be no consequences for violating these expected behaviors. Coincidentally, the opposition to any consequences for violating this board policy came from the person who is under investigation for the abuses the policy is attempting to prevent.

Contributions to campaigns come in many shapes and forms. Printed endorsements, verbal endorsements, social media posts, volunteerism, and money to pay for campaign materials. There is a difference between a board member or politician voting on a matter by which they themselves or their immediate family would benefit (financially or otherwise) and participating in a vote that might involve someone from the community who assisted in their election. Part of a code of ethics, written or otherwise, would expect that an honorable person would recuse themselves from decisions in which there would be an actual or perceived conflict, or a decision in which they would personally benefit.

For example, an honorable person would recuse themselves from discussion at a meeting (or might even excuse themselves from the meeting) in which they themselves were the object of an investigation. It might seem to people observing the meeting that the person was attempting to intimidate or pressure their fellow board members from acting independently and in the best interests of the school district and community.

The Jericho School District deserves honorable Board of Education members who hold themselves to the same, if not higher, standards of behavior and ethics that are expected for the students and staff who learn and work there. Civility is not be something a Jericho board member should need to be counseled or reminded about, it is expected as a standard of behavior.

Will Jericho Have a Radical Music Program?

It is unbelievable the text message that went out to our community.

The depths to which these two Jericho Board of Education trustees will go. It is mind-blowing that these two Jericho trustees are trying to paint a music program for underprivileged kids as a “unique program sponsored by radical liberals”. El Sistema is a music education program that brings music to kids living in poverty.

A music program that is responsible for training the legendary conductor of the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Gustavo Dudamel, could be considered radical….The radical idea of bringing music and training to kids living in poverty and keeping them off the streets.

Wouldn’t it be great to have board trustees who want to bring things to people who are in need? Instead of trustees that want to block people from having things like housing and shelter?

Jericho needs to do better and keep this kind of trash off the board. Do your homework, get the facts, watch the meetings….The choice is clear.

What Did They Say…

It takes a serious commitment to academics and learning to become one of, if not THE top school district in the nation. There are certain Board of Education trustees who seem to think that school staff has tons of time to focus on things other than keeping our school #1 in New York.

When a person in authority says something, it should be truthful. A current board member has tried to portray a narrative that what is being taught to our children is nefarious, secretive, and divisive.

Continually trying to divide our community by casting out wild accusations, this trustee harms the reputation and trust in our community. Because we pay attention, we know their accusations are not true.

During Board of Ed meetings we have not heard ONE parent or student complaint brought up or the description of any type of lesson geared toward what this trustee is promoting as fact. But, how does a person with kids in the district even try and make it seem like their statements have even a thread of truth? Do they even speak with their kids about what they are doing in school? Don’t they have the same access as all parents to all homework and class assignments that are posted online? Do they even look at their kids work? Wouldn’t there be a community uproar if such things were actually happening in our kids classes?

This trustee has touted themselves as being all about transparency and rights. We have listened to several meetings where board policy on instructional materials have been discussed and what is clear is their agenda to have full control over removal of certain materials from the curriculum.

If you listen carefully you might even hear that they’d like certain types of people erased from the curriculum.

From the beginning of their term as trustee, this board member has tried to dismantle any and all programs that seek equity or promote diversity in our school programs. Painting a narrative that a certain agenda is being promoted in our schools. We know this is not true. Not one complaint or public comment has been made to support this trustee’s wild claims.

So, who is really trying their best to divide our community? Should teaching children about privilege and balancing what they hear and see in the news and on social media be something schools should shy away from addressing? Does anyone really believe that the teachers are telling the white kids that they are racist?

If you listen carefully you can hear their agenda loud and clear. Is this really what Jericho needs or wants as a trustee? Does anyone really believe that with such high accolades and results there is time to focus on anything other than rigorous academic curriculum? Jericho is a place where everyone feels welcome and accepted. We need to make sure it stays that way.

Let’s Not Have Politics Here…

A board trustee endorses a political candidate while speaking from the board table during a meeting.

It’s interesting that we spent months listening to complaints about using the district as a backdrop for political events and how “Trustees should not bring politics into our schools”, even as there was a clear endorsement from the Board table for a particular political candidate named George…

One board trustee does seem to always find a way to insert her political ideologies and candidate endorsements into school board meetings and social media posts as a board trustee.

Jen Vartanov really should re-evaluate her position or maybe change her attitude. She constantly brings politics to the Board of Education meetings and directly into her campaign and public posts. Does she really think this community doesn’t see her political viewpoints and campaigning embedded in her board table comments? We are not ignorant people who can be fooled by her lackluster acting and feigning a non-political agenda.

Just look at the major conflict she has raised by attacking programs and curriculum that supports tolerance and equity for all students. She came out attacking at one of her first public board meetings. Never mind that she didn’t attend a Board of Education meeting until she was elected to the board.

Her unwavering support of ousted congressman George Santos is a clear indication of just how embedded her politics are in everything she does. This was lately reported in another blog (the Handbasket), giving her the opportunity to distance herself from Santos. She chose to stay loyal to the fold.

And then there was her support of the hate-group endorsed Board of Education candidate who ran and lost for the last two years.

So where does she stand now? Are her claims of not bringing politics into schools just words or does she practice what she is preaching? If accepting and posting public endorsements from politicians isn’t bringing politics into our schools, what is? Perhaps she’ll be endorsed by “Mom’s for Liberty” or “LI Loud Majority” like her friends above…

If you are going to speak from the board table and post on your public sites about keeping politics out of the schools, then you should really think about how your actions are speaking so much louder than your words. Jericho deserves Board of Education trustees who speak the truth and whose actions support what they say. Do we really need people who are in it for a photo op and maybe just to promote their own political ambitions?

Here he goes again…

When John Sarraf ran for the Jericho Board of Education last year, according to what we’ve been told, he didn’t even want to be interviewed by the teacher’s union for an endorsement. He made very public comments about how independent he was by not accepting any endorsements. Not quite the truth…

What he omitted to tell us was that while he had no interest in seeking an endorsement from the teachers, he was willing to ask (and receive) endorsements from two groups associated with national groups that promote racism and antisemitism. He accepted endorsements from both the Long Island Loud Majority and the 1776 Project.

For someone who ran on a platform of leaving political ideology out of public education it is ironic that he chose to accept endorsement from two extremely politically focused groups. Is this really what Jericho needs on its Board? Someone who doesn’t trust the teachers, but trusts the hate groups? Someone who lied about being independent and not accepting any endorsements? Will these groups expect something for their endorsement?

Who should walk across the stage…

For several months we’ve been listening to a certain Jericho Board of Education trustee who believes that his understanding and knowledge about pedagogy and best education practices is greater than anyone else, even though he has no experience in education

Picture a student with special needs going through school. Elementary School Middle School, High School….moving through grade levels with their peers. A student developing friendships and learning how to navigate social situations with other students who know and care about each other. There are times when students with special needs might remain in the public school setting through age 21.

Some students, in this circumstance, may not meet all of the requirements to receive a diploma at the same time (12th grade) as their friends with whom they have attended school since kindergarten. In most schools a student in this situation would be permitted to walk the stage at graduation, even though they would not get a diploma. To be clear, they are NOT receiving a diploma. They are not graduating or being listed or named as a graduate. These special needs students are simply participating in an activity with the friends they have attended school alongside for most of their life.

Several months have been spent listening to a particular member of the Jericho Board of Education object to this practice. His opinion was that “these students” would “tarnish the brand”. What a horrible way to think of students, especially children who have special needs. How does showing compassion and kindness “tarnish a brand”?

Getting elected to a Board of Education does not have any requirements to have  education experience or training in education practices. But in Jericho there is a member of the board who feels he alone should have the deciding voice in what is best for a student. He believes that his understanding and knowledge about pedagogy and best education practices is greater than anyone else, even though he has no experience in education. He feels that as a member of the Board of Education he should be the final arbiter of what is best for a student with special needs.

Or, is it just that he has an ax to grind with certain parents and certain district employees?
